The 3 Primary Methods of Installing an Inflatable Cofferdam

An inflatable cofferdam such as the Aqua-Barrier provides a simple, low-cost way to guard against excess water. The barrier can be installed in anticipation of a flood, as a dewatering method, or to help curb the flow of water. Today, we’ll be looking at the proper cofferdam installation methods for all three primary scenarios.

Installing the Aqua-Barrier

The Aqua-Barrier provides excellent protection against flood waters or water around a construction site. However, as with any type of cofferdam, it must be properly installed to work correctly. The three scenarios in which an inflatable cofferdam is usually deployed are as follows:

  1. Dry surface installation
  2. Static water installation
  3. Dynamic water installation

1) Dry Surface Installation

To install the Aqua-Barrier on a dry surface, simply unroll it around the area you want to protect and inflate the cofferdam with water to its desired height. That’s it!

Installing the cofferdam on a dry surface is usually done as a preventive measure if flooding is anticipated. For particularly nasty floods, it’s recommended to inflate the Aqua-Barrier to its maximum height of about six feet. Don’t let even a drop of water get through.

Pro Tip: Smooth out the area your Aqua-Barrier will lie on as much as possible. While the vinyl is strong, obstructions could be problematic.

2) Static Water Installation

You would use this installation method to install the Aqua-Barrier in a body of stagnant water, such as a swimming pool. Unroll the Aqua-Barrier across the surface of the water and float it to its desired position. Once the cofferdam is in place, begin pumping in water. The cofferdam will inflate downwards into the body of water and provide a sturdy barrier.

3) Dynamic Water Installation

For construction projects such as pipeline repair, you’ll have to install the Aqua-Barrier in moving water. Start by positioning one end of the cofferdam in place with heavy equipment, like a backhoe, and anchor the other end to the shoreline. Inflate the bladder from the flowing water until it’s sufficiently blocked and you can begin work.

Using an Inflatable Cofferdam Properly

An Aqua-Barrier is the quickest, safest, and most cost-effective way to ensure that your property stays flood-free and your construction projects aren’t overrun with water. If you take the time to properly install your bladder dam, you’ll never have to worry about leaks or flooding.
